Summary: An Excellent Collection of Speeches
Comment: This is a good, compact book for those interested in a "crash course" on black history and politics. This collection represents well the issues of slavery and racial inequality, and the African American's struggle for equal justice and opportunity. I strongly recommend it for those interested in race, politics, and justice. Some themes of religion are also present throughout. A short volume of this size cannot possibly do justice to the whole of African American tradition; the selections by women are few (but present), the representation of slavery and slave issues is very heavy, and arts, culture and literature is omitted, but speeches do tend to be political and so this book remains true to that theme. I could see this book being very useful for a course on race and political justice. On the whole a good read.

Summary: Excellent Historic Record of Important African American Speeches
Comment: This book is an excellent record of African-American speeches. It has speeches recorded as early as 1843 to the more recent time of our historic era. This is a book of which every household should acquire a copy. Just a stunningly excellent record of African American speeches!

Summary: Good Thing in Small Package
Comment: The book is kind of small with small print and contains 20 speeches. Most of the orators are well known to include MLK Jr and Malcolm X, but only one entry per speaker. I was surprised to see a speech by Obama, albeit a lessor known commencement address. The 2004 Democratic Convention speech would have probably been a good addition. It was a very inexpensive book so a good value.
